The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has given the green light to tender the preliminary design study (estudio informativo) for extending the Madrid Cercanías commuter network to Mejorada del Campo. Minister Óscar Puente announced the move on his X account.
The scheme forms part of the Madrid Cercanías Plan. It envisages a new station at Mejorada del Campo, linked to the network at San Fernando de Henares. According to Puente, the planned investment totals €100m.
The aim is to achieve a frequency of six trains per hour and around 8,000 passengers per day.
Mejorada town council has noted that the Ministry launched preliminary feasibility studies last year. The outcome was favourable, allowing the procedure to proceed.
At present, the municipality has no direct link to either Cercanías or the Madrid Metro. The inter-urban bus is the only public transport option for reaching both networks.
The preliminary design study must define the characteristics and alignment of the future extension before the project moves to subsequent phases.
