French rolling stock manufacturer Alstom completed the delivery of the final unit on 30 September, as part of the renewal of the rolling stock on Singapore’s North-South and East-West metro lines. The trains belong to the R151 series, based on the Movia platform.
This milestone concludes the fleet modernisation programme, which aims to provide more reliable, accessible and sustainable public transport. Their sustainability credentials will remain in place throughout their service life, as the trains are manufactured using almost 100 per cent recyclable materials.
The new rolling stock comprises 636 cars forming 106 trains, replacing the older C151 (1987), C651 (1995) and C751B (2000) series. The new units will improve the passenger experience and increase reliability, areas where the C651 and C751B fleets have been weak.
Singapore’s Land Transport Authority initially awarded a contract to a joint venture of Bombardier Transportation and CRRC Changchun to deliver 66 trains. The contract was subsequently expanded to 106 units. The Changchun plant, operated by both manufacturers, carried out manufacturing, with support from Alstom teams in Singapore, China, Germany, and Sweden, as well as from operator SMRT Trains.
