High-speed train services between Madrid and Barcelona have been disrupted since Monday afternoon after a fire broke out on a Series 100 train that had departed Madrid Puerta de Atocha at 14:27 for Figueres.
The fire was reported at around 16:05 near Ricla, in Zaragoza, in the trailing power car of unit 100-017. The operator activated safety protocols and evacuated the 283 passengers on board. Renfe has reported no injuries, indicating that the damage appears to be material only.
The incident forced the suspension of high-speed services on the corridor, with trains held at various stations and this afternoon’s scheduled departures cancelled. The operator has activated passenger-assistance measures, including free ticket changes and refunds.
For the time being, Renfe has been unable to estimate how long services will remain disrupted and has called a press conference for 19:30 to provide further details.
