FCC Construcción Portugal and Convensa have completed the excavation of the section between Casa da Música and Campo Alegre on the future Rubí line of the Porto Metro. The tunnelling of this section represents one of the project’s most complex technical challenges, designed to adapt to the geology of the terrain and minimise any impact on the surface.
Once excavation is complete, work will focus on constructing the tunnel structure, fitting the track superstructure and installing the electrification and signalling systems. The use of LiDAR technology, which integrates geographic information systems (GIS) and BIM methodology, will ensure complete precision in the geometry of the works, guaranteeing the safety of on-site procedures throughout the construction phase.
The Rubí Line (Line H) will have a total length of 6.3 kilometres, connecting Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia. The project includes the construction of a new bridge over the River Douro for the exclusive use of the metro, pedestrians and cyclists, establishing itself as one of the largest investments in public transport and green infrastructure in northern Portugal.
This new infrastructure is set to transform metropolitan transport by diverting a significant volume of road traffic between the two banks, which will reduce CO₂ emissions and reinforce Metro de Oporto’s commitment to the environment.
