Adif chairman Luis Pedro Marco de la Peña submitted his resignation on Wednesday to First Deputy Prime Minister Carlos Cuerpo, who has taken over management of the Ministry of Transport following Óscar Puente’s resignation. Although some sources describe the move as a dismissal, Europa Press says Marco de la Peña had already told Puente he intended to leave the post in the wake of the Urda rail accident.
Cuerpo met with the Adif chairman and Transport State Secretary José Antonio Santano in an initial contact meeting after taking charge of the department. At that meeting, Marco de la Peña communicated his departure.
Marco de la Peña had led Adif since September 2024, taking over from the short-lived Àngel Contreras, who had held the post for less than a year. He previously served as deputy minister for Infrastructure and Transport in the Basque Government, where Puente also brought in Santano in 2023.
The leadership change comes amid a rail crisis following the Urda accident. The government has approved €30 million in aid and safety measures, including enhanced supervision of train operations and a temporary reduction in frequencies on the Madrid–Seville line while ERTMS is implemented.
