A collision between a Renfe AVE train and an Iryo train between Los Yébenes and Urda (Toledo) has left at least 69 people dead, although sadly the death toll is expected to rise. Among the dead are two Renfe train drivers and two members of the Iryo crew.
The accident occurred following a fault in the LZB system. As confirmed by Renfe to Railin, the trains in the area affected by the incident came to a halt and the Traffic Control Centre ordered them to resume their journey. The AVE driver, who was operating a 103-series train, was not informed of the presence of the train operated by Iryo.
However, here at Railin we urge caution. Generally speaking, a rail accident has several causes, and the most obvious explanation is not always the correct one.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those who have lost their lives; we wish the very best to those fighting for their lives in hospital; and we would like to thank the emergency services staff for the work they are doing.
